After a man’s refusal to give up his seat on an overbooked United Airlines flight, police forcefully dragged him off the plane. Passengers’ recordings of the incident have become viral and caused an outrage in China.

United asked for four passengers to give up their seats voluntarily for compensation, in order for United crew members to be able to board the flight, scheduled to work on another one in Louisville. Airline spokesman Charlie Hobart states that after no one volunteered, the airline was forced into a ” involuntary de-boarding situation.” During these situations the airline weighs a number of factors to determine which passengers are selected such as connecting flights and how long the customer will be waiting at the airport, Hobart says.

Passenger on the flight, Tyler Bridges says the request happened after everyone had boarded and it was easy to understand why no one responded since it was a Sunday night and the next flight would not be until the following afternoon.

Bridges explained that two officers calmly tried to explain the whole situation before a third officer approached the man  in an aggressive manner telling him to get off the plane. After resisting, the officer began to pull him out of his seat and carry him out the plane along with the other officers.

Bridges also explains that the man hit himself against the armrest and began to yell that he was a doctor and being profiled for being Chinese. Bridges says the whole situation “was pretty shocking that it got to the level that it got to. In part that’s the man’s fault, when the police came on he shouldn’t have resisted, he should have just left. But it was a pretty unbelievable scene with them grabbing him and pulling off.”

The recordings of the disaster began trending on all social media and comments called for boycotts towards the airline accusing United of being discriminating towards the man for being Chinese. Oscar Munoz, the CEO of United Airline later took to twitter to apologize for the incident by stating, ” This is an upsetting event to all of us here at United. I apologize for having to re-accommodate these customers. Our team is moving with a sense of urgency to work with the authorities and conduct our own detailed review of what happened. We are also reaching out to this passenger to talk directly to him and further address and resolve this situation.”
