Irma Rangel has an amazing orchestra program that includes high school and middle school orchestra. The program is run by Lindsey Hernandez. For many of the students it is more than a simple orchestra class, it is an “opportunity to be able to make music with their hands (Jackie Vega),” and having “an opportunity of meeting other people in your class that love music and be able to have your own orchestra family that doesn’t question you when you name your violin Harry (Daniela Ocampo).”

This year, Ms. Hernandez will take her upper level high school orchestra to perform at the Pre- University Interscholastic League (Pre-UIL) in April 11. The orchestra is considered non varsity because they do not have enough instruments to be considered varsity, even though some students have been playing for more than 2 years. The music that will be performed are “Petite Tango”, “English Folk Song”, and “Little Symphony”. From now until April everyone will be practicing their best to do well at pre-UIL.

Daniela Ocampo

“I have done solo and ensemble before which is similar to pre-UIL, but I am still very nervous. If it were up to me, my [orchestra] class would not participate because we have a song that includes a viola solo and we only have one viola player and it can’t be heard since there are so many violinist. My favorite songs are “Petite Tango” and “Little Symphony” because they are fast songs. I do not like “English folk song because it is very slow and my arm gets tired halfway through. I think we’ll do well.” says Daniela.

Jackie Vega

“I’ve never done something like Pre-UIL before and I am a little nervous, but I think we’ll be great. My least favorite song is “Little Symphony” because it’s too repetitive. My favorite is “English Folk Song”. I’m really looking forward to the performance” says Jackie.
